Figure painting

These pictures deal with human beings. There are various types of jinbutsu-ga. For example, there are pictures in which a single person is depicted and there are also gunzo (a group of people). There are cases of rekishi-ga (a historical painting) and fuzoku-ga (a genre picture) which also deal with people. Ratai-ga (a nude picture) is also in the category of jinbutsu-ga. Human figures have always been the main subject matter of kaiga (paintings) both in the East and the West. There is a fine example of this type of painting in Japan entitled Torige Ryu-jo-no Byo-bu (Screen of Standing Ladies Decorated with Bird Feathers) which belongs to the Nara period.
