What is ukiyoe

Ukiyoe (Pictures of the Floating World)

Ukiyo-e prints and paintings are among the most widely known and admired arts of the Edo period. (17th-19th Century) Some prints were created in early Meiji.
With the rise of the merchant class during the 17th century, there followed a demand for images of urban life in a new style reflecting the lives of the commoners. Ukiyo means the “floating world” or the temporal world. There are various Ukiyo-e artists and their artworks reflecting the techniques available at that time and political backgrounds.
