Biography of Hiroshi SENJU
1958 - Japanese painter Hiroshi SENJU was born in Tokyo.
1982 - Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts.
1984 - Graduated the masters program at Tokyo University of the Arts. Graduation work purchased by Tokyo University of the Arts.
1987 - Completed coursework of the doctoral program at Tokyo University of the Arts. Graduation work purchased by The University of Tokyo.
1989 - The End of Dream, solo exhibition was held at Manly Art Gallery & Museum in Sydney, Australia.
1990 - History of Japanese-Style Painting, group exhibition was held at The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama in Kanagawa Prefecture.
1993 - Selected on the cover of Art Now Gallery Guide – New York. Flatwater, solo exhibition was held at Maxwell Davidson Gallery in New York.
1994 - Hiroshi Senju: 1980-1994, solo exhibition was held at Takamura Museum in Yamanashi Prefecture. Received Excellence Award, 7th MOA Mokichi Okada Award.
1995 - Hiroshi Senju, solo exhibition was held at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taipei, Taiwan. Received Honorable Mention at 46th La Biennale di Venezia, Italy.
1996 - Hiroshi Senju – Waterfalls & Glasses, solo exhibition was held at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, Kanagawa Prefecture.
1998 - Received Konju-hosho (Dark Blue Ribbon Medal) for Hachigatsu no Sora to Kumo (August Sky and Clouds) which is collected by Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art.
2000 - Received Michiaki Kawakita Award for Life exhibited in Ryoyonome Exhibition: Painting in the 21st Century.
2002 - The New Way of Tea, group exhibition was held at Japan Society and Asia Society in New York. Received Grand Prize, at the 13th MOA Mokichi Okada Award. The Scent and Shape of Ink, group exhibition was held at National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
2003 - Paintings on Fusuma at the Juko-in of Daitoku-ji Temple, group exhibition was held at Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo. Kaiga no Genzai (Present-day Art), group exhibition was held at Bandaijima City Museum in Niigata Prefecture. The essence of Contemporary Nihonga, group exhibition was held at Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture. Contemporary Japanese Painting, group exhibition was held at Okazaki Mindscape Museum in Aichi Prefecture. Completed mural paintings for the foyer of Grand Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo.
2004 - Art Direction for Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) Domestic Terminal 2 in Tokyo.
2005 - Hiroshi Senju -77 Panels of fusuma-e for Juko-in Annex of Daitoku-ji Temple, solo exhibition was held at Fukuoka Asian Museum in Fukuoka Prefecture.
2006 - Exhibited at The 6th Gwangju Biennale in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Designed dial face of a watch, Reverso, Jaeger-LeCoultre, 75th-anniversary special limited edition. Hiroshi Senju, solo exhibition was held at Yamatane Museum of Art in Tokyo.
2007 - Masterpiece Collection of Yamatane Museum of Art, group exhibition was held at The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama in Toyama Prefecture. Completed paintings on fusuma at Shofuso in Pennsylvania, USA. Hyakubashira wo Tateru, Kusokuzeshiki, Senju Hiroshi (Building One Hundred Pillars, Emptiness is the form, Hiroshi Senju) was held at Matsumoto City Museum of Art in Nagano Prefecture. Harukanaru Aoi Hikari, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York. Took office as president of Kyoto University of Art & Design.
2008 - Still /Motion: Liquid Crystal Painting, group exhibition was held at Mie Prefectural Art Museum in Mie Prefecture. Completed ceramic Board Mural, Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line, Shinjuku-Sanchome Station in Tokyo.
2009 - Art House project Ishibashi, Benesse Art Site, Kagawa Prefecture. New Light from a Far, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery, Los Angels, USA.
Out of Nature: Cliffs and Falling Water, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery, Hong Kong, China.
2010 - The Invitations to 20th Century Art, group exhibition was held at The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu in Gifu Prefecture. Masterpiece Collection of Saku Municipal Museum of Modern Art, group exhibition was held at Takasaki Tower Museum of Art in Gunma Prefecture. Hiroshi Senju: World of Blue – Echoes of Kaii Higashiyama was held at Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Museum in Kagawa Prefecture. Exhibited at theSetouchi Triennale in Kagawa Prefecture. Art Direction for APEC Japan 2010 in Yokohama.
Art Direction for Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) International Passenger Terminal and expanded Domestic Terminal 2 in Tokyo.
2011 - Art Direction for the new building of Japan Railways Hakata Station. His private museum Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa Opened. The Source of Creativity, group exhibition was held at Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture. Exhibited at The 5th Chengdu Biennale in Chengdu, China. Vision of Nature, Lost and Found, in Asian Contemporary Art, group exhibition was held at Hong Kong Arts Centre in Hong Kong. Art Direction for Gucci 90th anniversary archive exhibition at Kinkakuji Temple in Kyoto.
2012 - Cliffs, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York.
Mural for OUB Centre in Singapore. Stage Design for The Japanese Classical Dance with Orchestra, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo.
2013 - Stage Design for Opera KAMIKAZE, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. Completed mural paintings for Ekoin Temple in Tokyo. Art Direction for Sazaedo building, Taisho University in Tokyo. Art Direction for Message Cherry Blossoms project, KITTE Marunouchi in Tokyo. Day Falls/Night Falls, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Hong Kong. The Tale of Genji – the Skies of Heian Period, solo exhibition was held at Sagawa Art Museum in Shiga Prefecture. Setouchi Triennale in Kagawa Prefecture. Stage Design for “Jyusuke Hanayagi and Tamasaburo Bando” Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. Resigned as president of Kyoto University of Art & Design.
2014 - Stage Design for opera YUZURU, performed at various cities in Japan.
2015 - Day Falls/Night Falls, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Singapore. Ceramic Tile Mural for Public Bath at JR Onagawa Station in Miyagi Prefecture. Frontiers Reimagined at 56th La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy. Public art project commissioned by Southern Branch of The National Palace Museum in Taiwan R.O.C.
2016 - Paintings on Fusuma dedicated for Juko-in in Daitokuji temple was open to the public along with Fusuma painted by Eitoku Kano in Kyoto. Mizu to Hikari no Genso (Illusions in Water and Light), was held at Toindo in Yakushiji temple in Nara Prefecture. Yakushiji special exhibition: Shikisai Jiku wo Koete (Transcending colors) was held at Toindo in Yakushiji temple in Nara Prefecture. Received Foreign Minister's Commendation for FY 2016 by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
2017 - At World's End, solo exhibition was held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York. Received the fourth Isamu Noguchi Award.
2018 - Received Award for Excellence in Art, Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia, USA. Released Octo Finissimo Hiroshi Senju from BVLGARI. Following its staging at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design, Commemorating the Completion of Fusuma Paintings for Kongobuji Temple, Koyasan, solo tour exhibition, Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & design in Toyama Prefecture. Tsuruoka Art Forum, Yamagata, Japan, jointly held at Akita Senshu Museum of Art, and Akita Museum of Art in Akita Prefecture. Hiroshi Senju & teamLab Collaborative Exhibition: Waterness was held at Dojima River Forum in Osaka.
2019 - Hiroshi Senju’s 40th year anniversary exhibition: Sogon & Kakucho, 21st century Japanese paintings was held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store in Tokyo. Commemorating the Completion of Fusuma Paintings for Kongobuji Temple, Koyasan, solo tour exhibition was held at Sogo Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture.
