Biography of Ikuo HIRAYAMA

Portrait of Ikuo HIRAYAMA1930 - Japanese painter Ikuo HIRAYAMA was born in Hiroshima Prefecture.
1945 - Survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
1947 - Entered Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of Arts).
1949 - Graduated from the Department of Japanese-style painting of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of Arts). Took office as a junior assistant of Japanese-style painting of Tokyo University of Arts. Studied under Seison MAEDA.
1953 - Exhibited his work "Ieji (Homeward)" at the 38th Inten Exhibition, and awarded his first prize. Became the "Inyu" of the Japan Art Institute.
1961 - Won the Japan Art Institute Award.
1962 - Went to Europe as the first recipient of a UNESCO fellowship.
1963 - Received the Encouragement Prize, Hakuju Award and G Award at the 48th Inten Exhibition.
1964 - Became the "Dojin" of the Japan Art Institute. Received the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts at the 49th Inten Exhibition.
1973 - Became professor of Tokyo University of the Arts.
1974 - Bequeathed his work "Buddhist Missionaries to the Ancient East" to the modern religious arts collections of the Vatican.
1975 - Went to China for the first time.
1978 - Received the Prime Minister Prize at the 63rd Inten Exhibition.
1988 - Took office as a dean of the Faculty of Art of Tokyo University of Arts.
1988 - Appointed to a Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO.
1989 - Took office as a president of Tokyo University of Arts.
1993 - Designated a Person of Cultural Merit.
1995 - Resigned as a president of Tokyo University of Arts.
1996 - Took office as the Grand Master of the Japan Scholarship Foundation. Awarded the Legion d'Honneur of France. Appointed to the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Japan Art Institute.
1997 - His private museum, Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art was opened in Hiroshima Prefecture.
1998 - Given the Order of Culture.
1999 - Became a member of a Foreign Associate of the French Academy. Received the James Smithson Prize by the Smithsonian Institution.
2001 - Received the Ramon Magsaysay Award of the Republic of the Philippines. Took office again as a president of Tokyo University of Arts.
2002 - Received the Cultural Exchange Contribution Award by Chinese government.
2004 - Received the second class of the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit by the Republic of Korea.
2005 - Resigned as a president of Tokyo University of Arts.
2009 - Ikuo HIRAYAMA passed away at the age of 79.
