Biography of Shoko UEMURA

Portrait of Shoko UEMURA1902 - Japanese painter Shoko UEMURA was born in Kyoto. His mother is a Japanese painter Shoen UEMURA.
1920 - Graduated from Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts. Entered Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, and studied under Suisho Nishiyama. Entered Shoko-sha, a private school of painting. Awarded his first prize at the 3rd Teiten Exhibition.
1924 - Graduated from Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, then went to the graduate school.
1928 - Won the Special Award at the 9th Teiten Exhibition.
1930 - Completed the graduate course of the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting.
1933 - His first son, Atsushi UEMURA was born. Exhibited at the Teiten exhibition, and became exempted from future examinations required to display art in the exhibition.
1947 - Appointed to the Judge of the Nitten exhibition.
1948 - Formed a new organization with several other artists called "Sozo Bijutsu" (Creation of Art).
1949 - Became a professor at Kyoto City Specialist School of Arts.
1959 - Received the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts.
1967 - Received Japan Art Academy Award.
1972 - Designated a Person of Cultural Merit by Kyoto City.
1973 - Received a Merit Award of Arts and Crafts in Kyoto Prefecture. Received the third class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure.
1974 - The Nihonga Division of Shinseisaku Association was reorganized as Sogakai.
1981 - Appointed to the member of The Japan Art Academy.
1983 - Designated a Person of Cultural Merit.
1984 - Selected as an honorary citizen of Kyoto City. Given the Order of Culture.
2000 - Shoko UEMURA passed away at the age of 98.
