Ash glazes, Hai-gusuri
A type of glaze in which the ashes of plants are used as the fluxing agents. The ashes used for glaze are divided into three groups: isubai (isu wood ash) which is made of isu wood, dobai (wood ash) which is made of various kinds of woods, and warabai (straw ash) which is made of rice straw. The ashes made from wood are called kibai (wood ashes). The ashes of wood came to be used as glazes during the Yin dynasty in China, and during the Nara period in Japan.
