Carrying box, Oi
A wooden square box with four legs in which a Buddhist statue, Buddhist implements, priest's clothes, and food are contained, and which is carried by a yamabushi (mountain ascetic priest) on his back. The inside of the box is divided into two parts: the upper part has a double-leaf hinged door, and the lower part has a kendon-buta (vertical halved door). The front surface of the box is covered with a gilt bronze sheet, on which the designs of stupas, Buddhist wheel treasures, lotus flowers blooming over a pond etc., are engraved. Sometimes the front of the box is decorated with Kamakurabori carvings, instead of the metal-sheet decoration.
