Jaki, Evil spirit
An evil or demonic spirit who is thought to harm human beings; in Buddhist art it is an evil spirit who tries to hinder Buddhist teaching. Also known as yasha (yaksa). These figures are ordinarily shown being crushed under the feet of the Shi Tenno, guardian gods of the four directons. But occasionally they are shown as benevolent spirits, that is, as kenzoku (attendants) to Goho-shin. Niranba and Biranba, shown crouching under the feet of Tobatsu Bishamon-ten, are good examples of the latter.
