Naijin, Inner sanctuary
Inner sanctuary of Shinto and Buddhist architecture. It denotes all the inner space within the irikawa pillars when the building has no space reserved for worshipers, and when it has that space the name is confined to the part where the principal image or other object of worship is enshrined. In both cases the outer space is called gejin (outer sanctuary). Naijin and gejin are partitioned by kekkai (boundary), of which lattice (koshi) is one example.
